Nerve plexus injuries
The nerve roots that leave the spinal cord form nerve plexuses at the side of the neck and at the pelvis, from which the individual nerves of the arms and legs emerge. In an accident, nerve plexuses or nerves can be damaged due to tension or pressure. This results in paralysis of muscle groups in the arms or legs; in isolated cases, the arms or legs can be left completely immobile.
Recovering from nerve damage often takes months; a complete recovery is sometimes no longer possible depending on the severity of the injury. Intensive physiotherapy and ergotherapy improve the functions that are retained and compensatory functions are learned. Sometimes, using assistive devices such as foot splints can further improve function.
