Traumatic brain injury
Brain injuries caused by accidents can affect certain parts of the brain ("focal") or the whole brain ("diffuse") and are usually noticeable due to symptoms such as disturbances of consciousness with a limited ability to communicate, dysphagia and paralysis. The brain scan confirms the clinical diagnosis and leads to the first decisions about treatment in the emergency department.
The process of regaining independence in everyday life requires patience. Patients often exhibit abnormal behaviour and have a limited understanding of their illness in addition to their cognitive and physical impairments. This places considerable demands on the skills of the doctors, nurses and therapists in terms of the rehabilitation process. Tailored care that does justice to each individual patient on a holistic basis is essential for a successful return to independence.
